first thing to note. It’s hot. Seattle sings in the sushine.  i got here yestrday after a fantastic weekend at the Denman island Writers and Readers festival. If you don’t know about it and you live anywhere in British Columbia then check it out. The most beautiful place, the kindest most hospitable people and the most stimulating discussions – religion, spirituality ( not always the same thing) politics,  16th century nuns , writing you name it . And all around the  forests and the water – the most delicate delicious light  with a touch of melancholy.  i cannot wait to go back.

struggling with a lost voice ( if anyone finds it send it via my website) but looking forward to finding one when I need to. This morning a tv interview with Nancy Pearl the US’s great public ( in many senses) librarian, tonight an event with the university bookshop then on tomorrow to LA.  more planes than a human being ought to take – a carbon footprint  that will take years to recover from. i shall have to walk to Italy for the next decade, but the conversations that come at the end of the events are worth it.

otherwise  as long as i remember to eat it all goes well…..

You were really fantastic tonight in Seattle!!!….what’s this about a lost voice…surely you found it before your talk! :-)

Can’t wait to read SACRED HEARTS!

It was so nice to meet up with you again!

I am so delighted you are on tour with your new book. I “met” you in the Barnes&Noble book club discussion of In the Company of the Courtesan. It was there that I also met Susanne and Roger and Loretta. Susanne just emailed to say she saw you last night in Seattle. I am in New York and planning to attend your book talk at the Barnes&Noble in my neighborhood on August 3rd. As a result of that B&N discussion of your book, some of us, as you know, formed Cafe dei Letterati. I hope to see you on the 3rd!

Sarah, I’m happy that you enjoyed Seattle so much. I shall sheepishly report this to a very good friend who lives there as I frequently make unfavorable comments to her about Seattle’s weather, etc. as compared to Los Angeles.

In that same vein, I attended your book-signing in Pasadena, and was sorry to see such a poor turnout. I wonder if we set the record for fewest attendees ever! A dubious distinction I hope we’ve avoided. Please remember that this is the land of the lotus-eaters and therefore, perhaps, you’ll not hold it against us.

In any event, your presentation, in spite of the small group, which must have been disappointing to you, was excellent! I look forward to reading Sacred Hearts.

Richard
